“Outer victory begins when the inner battle stops commanding your movements.”Wagner Mota

IBJJF World Master 2026
“Every victory has a lot of people involved and committed.”
Still in his gi, with both medals on his chest, he thanks those who came before: his ancestors, his family, his students and every teacher who shaped the master.
“Jiu-jitsu is a tool for self-knowledge, for mental, physical, emotional and even financial development. Look how much gold there is here.”
The Master
An only child raised on the outskirts of São Paulo, he turned to martial arts out of need: he wanted a master. He found judo at 10 and, at 26, jiu-jitsu. “He really changed my life,” he says of his first teacher (Marcelo Behring).
Starts judo at Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras. “At least I learned how to take a beating and come back.”
At 26, brought by a friend from judo, he takes his first class with Marcelo Behring, a Rickson Gracie black belt. With him he reaches purple belt, and he starts teaching while still a blue belt.
Training partner and cornerman for Fábio Gurgel in the vale tudo days.
Receives his black belt from Fernando Tererê and Eduardo Telles, the TT team. Tererê, he says, was the best athlete he has ever trained.
At 45 he becomes a coach. Twelve years in the UFC alongside Demian, with two title fights: against Anderson Silva at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, and against Tyron Woodley at UFC 214.
A phone call to São Luís do Maranhão brings Caio Borralho to train with Demian. That is how Fighting Nerds was born, where today he coaches athletes such as Caio Borralho, Carlos Prates and Jean Silva.
Returns to competition after years away. “I’m not here to beat anyone, I’m here to beat myself.” Wins the black belt open class at the IBJJF World Master.
European champion and, at the IBJJF World Master, gold in his division and again in the open class. At 62.
Lineage and training
The Wagner Mota Method · Inner Jiu-Jitsu
“The outside is how you express what is inside you.” That is how he works with UFC athletes, masters competitors and kids: getting into the student’s mind, finding what needs to be awakened and adjusted, and only then getting to technique.
The word is also the story we build inside ourselves, before the fight even begins.
I can only be impeccable with what I am able to notice. If I don’t notice the thought, it leads me.
Presence is not the absence of emotion. It is to keep choosing while the emotion is there.
Between stimulus and action there is a space for decision.
Don’t fight the whole fight in advance. Fight the moment in front of you, impeccably.
“We create armor that shields us from the potential we have.”
Mindset, posture and NLP tools so athletes can recognize what holds them back and reach a new level of confidence.
“Starting tomorrow, you’re taking guillotines. Guillotine, guillotine, guillotine, until it stops being a monster.”
Whatever holds the athlete back becomes training. “That’s the greatest path of development.”
“There is a moment in grappling when you move from intelligence to wisdom: when you stop fighting against and start fighting with.”
Your opponent’s movements start to serve your process.
“A guy with his back to the fence is the same as being on your back on the ground. Pass the guard.”
The transition that took Demian Maia’s jiu-jitsu into the Octagon: a striking guard to clinch safely, and being the best in the world against the fence.
The Impeccable Seminar comic
The whole week before the 2026 gold, told as a comic. You can’t be present for an entire week at once, so at each stage the horizon narrows and one question remains: what does this moment ask of me? The panels are in Portuguese; each stage is told in English beside them.
“What does this week ask of me?”
“What does this moment ask of me?”
“I don’t need to beat anyone right now. I need to get to know the environment.”
The fight hasn’t started yet, but the mind is already creating it. Be impeccable with your word and with the story you tell yourself.
“He’s strong” becomes “I haven’t fought him yet.”
Maybe it’s 30 seconds. I don’t need to control five minutes of fighting. I need to control:
There is no championship anymore. No podium. No medal. There is only:
For weeks the horizon kept narrowing: the week, the trip, the venue, the bullpen, the referee, the start. Not “win the fight.” Not “become world champion.”
“But rather: the first grip.”
The principle that leads to technique
Never “I need to win.” Always “What does this situation ask of me right now?”

Athletes
“I get hired after a fighter loses.” From the greatest jiu-jitsu in UFC history to the new generation at Fighting Nerds, and Talita Treta in Bellator, the work is the same: get to know the whole person, the family, the story, and speak each one’s language.
For Wagner, the best jiu-jitsu the UFC has ever seen. Together they drilled plan A in detail, eleven sessions a week, and took jiu-jitsu to the fence, where nobody was yet the best in the world.
“Inside the most violent event, we were the least violent, and that didn’t make us any less effective.”

Fighting Nerds starts with a phone call to São Luís: “What do you want?” The answer came without hesitation: “I want to be a UFC champion.”

“In the middle of the fight he goes up to the guy and says: sorry, for me it’s just work.” No anger at anyone, just a goal.

Black belt, jiu-jitsu world champion in gi and no-gi, and Bellator title challenger. Wagner was her coach and remains her mentor.

Jiu-jitsu world champion, coach and founder of Dream Art Pro and Dream Art Brooklin. Coached by Wagner Mota.
And many more: Jean Silva, Murata, Daniel Sarafian, Ícaro Brito and the Fighting Nerds team, which has had as many as 14 athletes in the UFC.
